I first met Rupa Kale (then Gawle) more than a decade ago on an online community forum for desis (Indians in the West). She was a bold, enterprising New Yorker who spoke her mind fearlessly on everything from politics to sex. Being new to the virtual world then, I was somewhat in awe of her and knew she’d go places. Last year, when I finally re-connected with her on Facebook, I found her married, with adorable 3-year-old twins and living in New Jersey. And, of course, she had not lost her warmth and irrepressible joie de vivre.
She is also now a happy, hard-working business owner. Just over a year ago, after having worked in the fashion and beauty industry for 23 years (most recently, in the Corporate Finance and Supply Chain and Logistics functions), she had taken the very tough step of leaving a lucrative position with L’Oreal to be able to spend more time with her children.
